New build homes could have charging points for electric cars to cut emissions

New build homes in suburban England would need to have electric car charging points fitted, government proposals announced by Transport Secretary Chris Grayling, has suggested.

This is to cut emissions and help the government reach its target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% of 1990 levels by 2050.

James Chidgey, new build homes relationship manger, Mortgage Advice Bureau, said: “This is where motoring is going. This would take some doing.

“There is obviously going to need to be a lot more charging points if we move to electric cars but this will unravel across a decade or more and of course people will gradually move that way and I can see it coming.

“It’s the way of the world. That is the future we are beign told so we need to adapt and evolve to be part of that.”

Mr Grayling said it would mean the nation would have "one of the most comprehensive support packages for zero-emission vehicles in the world".

"The prize is not just a cleaner and healthier environment but a UK economy fit for the future and the chance to win a substantial slice of a market estimated to be worth up to £7.6 trillion by 2050.”
